Adult Foster Care Homes (AFH/ACH)

AFH are family homes located in the community and accepts up to five elderly or disabled residents. They provide a “family-like” atmosphere with home cooking, more personalized care, better staff stability, and closer attention to residents, especially with fall prevention and medical care needs.

Adult Care Homes typically provide:

  • A home-like setting with no more than five residents
  • Help with all activities of daily living
  • Care through end of life
  • 24-hour live-in caregiver; one-two caregivers during the day
  • Caregiver sleeps at night and is not expected to provide care at night except in the case of an emergency
  • Medication administration
  • Private or semi-private (less common) rooms with shared bathrooms
  • All meals and housekeeping provided
  • Pay is based on level of care
  • Limited organized social activities
  • No nurse on site
  • Caregiver/residents ratio 1:5

When Families Typically Begin Considering an Adult Foster Home

Families often begin exploring adult foster homes when they realize their loved one needs more consistent, hands-on support than can comfortably be provided at home, but may not need or prefer a larger community setting.

This option is commonly considered when care needs are increasing and families are looking for a more intimate, highly personalized environment. Adult foster homes are often appealing to those who would benefit from closer supervision and daily assistance in a smaller residential setting with fewer residents.

At this stage, families may feel torn between wanting safety and support while also wanting warmth, familiarity, and individual attention. Adult foster homes can be especially meaningful when families value a home-like atmosphere and close caregiver relationships.

Common Events That Often Prompt Families to Look More Closely

The decision to consider an adult foster home is often prompted by the realization that support needs are becoming more consistent and hands-on, and that a smaller environment may feel more appropriate than a larger facility.

If you’re unsure about timing, you don’t have to figure this out alone.

Families frequently begin considering Adult Foster Homes as a Senior Care option after experiences such as:

  • increasing need for help with bathing, dressing, or mobility
  • medication management becoming more complex
  • concerns about falls or safety in the home
  • difficulty managing behavioral changes in a larger community
  • a preference for fewer residents and more individualized attention
  • a loved one feeling overwhelmed in larger assisted living settings

These experiences don’t necessarily mean a person requires a skilled nursing facility. What they often indicate is a need for daily support in a quieter, more personal setting where care can be closely tailored.

For many families, this is the point where an adult foster home offers a balance between structured care and a residential, home-like environment.

Adult Care Homes are appropriate for a person who:

  • Has declined in physical and/or cognitive status
  • Needs help with dressing, bathing, toileting, and medication administration
  • Has poor safety awareness or a history of falls
  • Has mild dementia without behavior problems
  • Uses a walker (Some ACHs can take wheelchairs, including power chairs. Level 3 ACH will take a hoyer lift.)

Adult Care Homes are not appropriate for a person who:

  • Needs night-time care
  • Has dementia with behavior problems
  • Is at risk of wandering

Frequently Asked Qiestions About Adult Foster Care Homes

What is the difference between an adult foster home and assisted living?

Adult foster homes are smaller, more home-like environments with up to five residents, offering more individualized attention. Assisted living communities are larger and offer a broader range of services and social opportunities.

Who is a good fit for an adult foster home?

This option is often a good fit for individuals who need consistent daily support and benefit from a quieter, more personal setting compared to larger assisted living or residential care communities.

How does an adult foster home compare to a residential care facility?

Both provide support with daily care, but adult foster homes are typically smaller and more intimate, while residential care facilities provide a higher level of care, may have more residents, and a more structured environment.

If you’re unsure this is the right fit, there are various options to meet your needs.

I found Ronit to be professional and respectful of my family's needs. She has a great way of communicating with humor and kindness. You could witness her knowledge of how difficult it is for an elder to change their lifestyle with the way she interviewed my Mom. I highly recommend this service.
